Ryan Leonard has decided not to join the Washington Capitals for the playoffs. Instead, he’s heading back to Boston College for his sophomore year.

General manager Brian MacLellan confirmed this on Wednesday. Leonard, who is considered the Capitals’ top prospect, wants to continue his development in college before considering a career in the NHL.

“We fully support Ryan’s choice to return to one of the top programs in the country to further his growth,” MacLellan stated.

During his freshman year, Leonard showed impressive leadership and progress. He had a remarkable season, setting records for goals scored by a freshman at Boston College and ranking third in goals across the NCAA.

Earlier in the day, there was speculation on social media about Leonard potentially changing his plans and signing with the Capitals. This came after the team secured a playoff spot with a win against Philadelphia.

Leonard, who was drafted eighth last year, had an outstanding season at Boston College, contributing significantly to the team’s success. Despite the opportunity to join the Capitals for the playoffs, he has decided to return to college for another year.

At Boston College, Leonard will have the chance to pursue a national championship alongside teammates like Will Smith (San Jose) and Gabe Perreault (Rangers).
