Sal Frelick hit his first home run of the season, and Joe Ross and three other pitchers combined to limit the Pittsburgh Pirates to just three hits in a 4-3 victory for the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.
Pittsburgh’s Nick Gonzales also hit his first home run of the year, while Connor Joe added another homer for the Pirates.
It had been a while since Gonzales and Frelick last hit home runs, with Gonzales’ previous one coming on July 2, and Frelick’s on August 7.
In addition to his home run, Frelick made two impressive catches in center field. His diving catches included snagging a sinking liner from Jared Triolo to end the second inning and robbing Andrew McCutchen of a potential extra-base hit in the eighth inning.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy praised Frelick’s performance, highlighting his talent and impact on the team.
Although Joe managed to hit a home run in the ninth inning, cutting Milwaukee’s lead to 4-3, pitcher Trevor Megill struck out Jack Suwinski to secure his fifth save of the season.
Ross pitched five innings, allowing just two hits, two runs, and one walk while striking out six batters. Bryan Hudson and Elvis Peguero also contributed solid performances, keeping the Pirates’ offense in check.
The Brewers took the lead in the second inning, scoring all four of their runs to secure the victory.
