Amid changes in coaching staff and with a high draft pick, quarterback Sam Howell expected he wouldn’t stay with Washington after last season, even if he remained their starting quarterback all year.
Now, with a move to the Seattle Seahawks, Howell realizes he might need to embrace being a backup, with Geno Smith already established as the starter.
Speaking after the Seahawks’ midway point in their offseason OTA practices, Howell expressed excitement about joining Seattle, despite the backup role.
“In this league, you have to compete to play, and I’m ready for that, no matter the circumstances or who’s the starter. If I’m starting, I’ll compete every day,” Howell said. “Geno has been great.
I’ve learned a lot from him, and I respect him and his career.”
In just two seasons, Howell has experienced a lot. He went from being a fifth-round pick in 2022 to leading the league in attempts, interceptions, and sacks in his second season as a starter for the Commanders.
Despite the challenges, Howell had some standout moments that showcased his potential as a starter. One of his best games was against the Seahawks, where he threw for 312 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions, albeit in a losing effort.
Reflecting on his past performances, Howell acknowledges areas for improvement, particularly in reducing turnovers and managing pressure behind a struggling offensive line.
