Sam Leavitt threw a touchdown pass and ran for another as Arizona State came back twice to win 31-28 against Texas State on Thursday night.

Cam Skattebo scored two short touchdowns, and the Sun Devils defense caused two turnovers in the fourth quarter. The first turnover was a fumble recovery on the Texas State 23-yard line, which led to Ian Hershey’s short field goal with 6:29 remaining, making it the winning point for Arizona State.

This win makes the Sun Devils 3-0 for the first time since 2019, and they will play their first Big 12 game next week at Texas Tech.

Leavitt’s 52-yard touchdown pass to Jordyn Tyson and his 7-yard touchdown run on the next drive helped Arizona State come back from a 21-7 deficit in the second quarter. Leavitt threw for 246 yards.

Skattebo, who had 262 rushing yards last week against Mississippi State, was mostly held back by the strong Texas State defense but made a big impact near the goal line. His 2-yard touchdown in the third quarter tied the game at 28-28.

Skattebo ended the game with 62 yards on 24 carries.

Jordan McCloud passed for 265 yards and four touchdowns, with two of those going to Jaden Williams for Texas State (2-1). However, he threw an interception after Arizona State took the lead in the fourth quarter.
