San Antonio Spurs star center Victor Wembanyama missed Saturday night’s game against Dallas due to a right knee contusion.
Spurs interim coach Mitch Johnson said that the 7-foot-3 Wembanyama, who was named NBA Rookie of the Year last season, is considered day-to-day.
After the Spurs lost to the Los Angeles Lakers at home on Friday night, Wembanyama said his leg was “pretty beat up.”
Wembanyama leads the Spurs with an average of 22.7 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. He also leads the NBA with 3.7 blocks per game, after finishing last season as the league’s top shot blocker with 3.6.
On Friday, he had 28 points and 14 rebounds in 34 minutes of play. He also scored a career-high 50 points in Wednesday’s win over Washington.
Coach Johnson said that without Wembanyama, there will be “a lot of minutes and a lot of shots” to make up for.
“Guys need to step up,” Johnson said. “We don’t need anyone trying to make a whole bunch of plays individually. We need to move the ball, probably play fast and try to continue to maintain our spacing.”
Zach Collins was set to start in place of Wembanyama.
The Spurs’ next game will be Tuesday at home against Oklahoma City.
