Jesús Sánchez brought Bryan De La Cruz home with a groundout in the 10th inning, helping the Miami Marlins secure a 1-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.

Both starting pitchers, Ryan Weathers for Miami and Reese Olson for Detroit allowed only three singles each in their career-best eight innings. Olson recorded six strikeouts, while Weathers finished with four.

“They both pitched exceptionally well,” commented Marlins manager Skip Schumacher. “Olson was in top form, and Weathers maintained control with his fastball, keeping the ball low.”

Despite having a solid 2.09 ERA, Olson remains winless in eight starts. The Tigers have struggled to score runs when he’s on the mound, having been shut out three times.

“Our offense has been productive, so I trust in them,” Olson remarked. “My focus is on throwing strikes.” In the 10th inning, Josh Bell led off with a single against Alex Lange, advancing De La Cruz to third. Sánchez then hit a grounder to second, resulting in a forceout.

A.J. Puk secured his first save by retiring the Tigers in order. Despite entering the game with a 9.00 ERA and multiple losses, Puk delivered a strong performance.

“We debated between Puk and Cronin for the 10th inning,” Schumacher revealed. “, we went with Puk due to his experience in that role.”

This win marked the Marlins’ 10th extra-inning shutout victory in franchise history. The last time was a 2-0 triumph over the New York Mets in 10 innings on July 10, 2022.

Ryan Weathers’ performance mirrored a bit of family history; his father, David Weathers, also pitched eight shutout innings for the Marlins against the San Diego Padres on Sept. 6, 1993. David Weathers, primarily a reliever throughout his 19-season career, made only 69 starts.
