Santiago Espinal played a big role, knocking in three runs, while reliever Fernando Cruz helped the Reds out of a tough spot in the seventh inning, securing a 7-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night.
Will Benson added a solo homer in the third inning. Espinal contributed with a two-RBI single during a four-run sixth inning, and drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. This followed Espinal’s impressive performance on Tuesday, where he went 3-for-4, including hitting his first home run as a Red.
Cincinnati’s starter, Nick Lodolo, pitched for five innings, giving up three runs and six hits while striking out four and walking three.
For the second consecutive night, Cruz entered the game with one out and managed to leave Phillies runners stranded on second and third base. He struck out Edmundo Sosa with a splitter and got a fly ball to right field from pinch-hitter Brandon Marsh, which Will Benson caught at the wall.
Reds manager David Bell praised Cruz’s fearless attitude, highlighting his belief in himself. Cruz himself expressed his enjoyment of such high-pressure situations, stating that he relishes the challenge.
Elly De La Cruz had an impressive game with three hits and three stolen bases, bringing his MLB-leading total to 15. In the eighth inning, he singled, stole second and third base, and scored on a fly ball by Spencer Steer.
Bell commended De La Cruz’s approach, emphasizing his understanding of the game situation and his ability to execute his plays effectively.
Unfortunately for the Phillies, Spencer Turnbull’s strong performance on the mound was not enough to secure a win. He allowed just one run and three hits over five innings, with eight strikeouts on 89 pitches.
