The only concern about Scottie Scheffler’s recent dominance in golf was that maybe he was too ordinary and not quite exciting enough to grab the attention of millions every week.
During nine intense hours on Day 2 of the PGA Championship, which started with Scheffler in a jail cell and ended with him near the top of the leaderboard, the world’s best player delivered a reality TV-like performance more enticing than any Netflix series or “Law & Order” episode.
“I never imagined ending up in jail,” Scheffler said after being detained for disobeying a police officer directing traffic after a fatal accident shut down roads before dawn. “And definitely not the morning before one of my tee times.”
Despite the unexpected turn of events, Scheffler made it to the golf course on time and shot a 5-under-par 66, finishing the day in fourth place, just three shots behind leader Xander Schauffele.
“My head is still spinning,” he admitted after the round. “I can’t really explain what happened this morning.”
How the Masters champion rebounds from one of the most surprising days of his life — and one of the most unusual days in golf — will be the weekend’s main storyline.
