Kyle Schwarber smashed two home runs, one being his 250th career homer, Cristopher Sánchez pitched well for six innings, and the Philadelphia Phillies sealed a sweep with a 7-6 win over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night.
Trea Turner had a home run, double, and single for the Phillies, who are now three games over .500. They have been successful in 13 of their last 15 games against the Rockies.
“There are nights when you have to fight and play strategically, and then there are nights like tonight,” Turner said. “Tonight was enjoyable.”
Ezequiel Tovar contributed three hits and two RBIs for Colorado, but they fell to a 4-15 record, tied for the worst in the NL with Miami.
Schwarber hit his 250th career home run with a 432-foot blast in the first inning off Ryan Feltner (1-2). He added another homer in the sixth inning, a 411-foot shot off Peter Lambert, extending the Phillies’ lead to 7-1.
While Schwarber appreciates hitting milestones, he’s more focused on the game itself. “I think they mean a little more when it’s done, and you’re on the couch watching baseball,” Schwarber said.
Sánchez (1-2) had a rough start but recovered to strike out 10 batters, walking just one while allowing five hits. The Rockies managed only one unearned run against him.
José Alvarado closed the game with a scoreless ninth for his third save. The game was played on a chilly, misty night, with temperatures around 60 degrees.
Colorado mounted a late rally in the eighth inning, scoring five runs against Gregory Soto and Jeff Hoffman. Tovar’s two-run single off Hoffman brought them within one, but Hoffman managed to escape further damage.
“That’s our group. That doesn’t surprise me,” Rockies manager Bud Black said of the team’s fighting spirit.
“This is a great group of competitors. We’re falling short right now. But they won’t melt. They’ll keep fighting, and these things will turn.”
