Seattle Mariners center fielder Julio Rodríguez was not in the starting lineup on Monday after exiting Sunday’s game in the sixth inning with a sprained right ankle. His status remains uncertain as he is considered “day to day.”

Rodríguez underwent an MRI on Monday afternoon to assess the extent of his injury, and the team is awaiting the results.

The injury occurred when Rodríguez jumped to catch a long hit by Houston Astros player Yordan Alvarez and collided with the outfield wall. He twisted his ankle on the wall’s padding, causing him significant pain. After a few minutes on the ground, Rodríguez walked off the field with manager Scott Servais and trainer Taylor Bennett.

Following Seattle’s 6-4 win, Servais mentioned that initial X-rays were negative, but the team will proceed cautiously with Rodríguez, the 2022 American League Rookie of the Year, before deciding on his return to play.

“Julio’s doing okay,” Servais said on Monday. “He’s undergoing evaluations, and we’ll have more information after the MRI. Early signs are hopeful that the injury isn’t severe, but we’ll wait for the MRI results.”

Rodríguez has shown strong performance at bat recently after a slow start to the season, hitting .459 with four home runs and eight RBIs in his last 12 games. His on-base percentage is .524, and his OPS is 1.389 during this period.
