Seattle Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo lost his chance at a perfect game and no-hitter with one out in the seventh inning on Wednesday when Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres hit a solo home run.
Woo had retired the first 19 batters he faced, but he left a fastball up and in, and Tatis managed to hit it fair down the left field line, ending Woo’s chance at a perfect game.
Prior to the seventh inning, Woo used his fastball effectively to keep the Padres from scoring. The closest San Diego came to a hit before Tatis’ home run was Manny Machado’s hard-hit line drive in the fifth inning, which was caught by Randy Arozarena with a diving catch.
Third baseman Josh Rojas also made a great defensive play, throwing out Xander Bogaerts on a slow grounder to end the second inning.
After Tatis’ homer, Jurickson Profar hit a double, and Jake Cronenworth walked on a full-count pitch, which led to Woo being taken out of the game.
In his second season in the majors, Woo was attempting to be the first pitcher to throw a perfect game since Domingo Germán of the New York Yankees did so on June 28, 2023, against the Oakland Athletics. Before that, Felix Hernandez of the Mariners had the last perfect game in 2012 against Tampa Bay.
