“Shaq did it again”. At 32 years old, and after moving from top-level European soccer to play in MLS, Xherdan Shaqiri is back in the spotlight and scoring once more on the international stage.
His impressive goal in the first half ensured Switzerland drew 1-1 against Scotland at Euro 2024 on Wednesday.
This marks the sixth consecutive major international tournament where Shaqiri has scored, starting from the 2014 World Cup.
He has now scored in three consecutive World Cups and three European Championships as a forward for the Chicago Fire, making him the first player to achieve this, according to UEFA.
“Tonight he demonstrated that these moments are what he lives and breathes for,” commented Switzerland coach Murat Yakin.
Shaqiri showcased his skill with a first-time, curling shot from around 20 meters away at Cologne Stadium.
Scotland took the lead in the 13th minute when Scott McTominay’s shot deflected off Fabian Schar and beat Switzerland’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
However, in the 26th minute, Shaqiri seized on Anthony Ralston’s loose pass and leveled the score with a left-footed strike into the top corner, beyond Scotland keeper Angus Gunn.
“If that opportunity had fallen to any other Swiss player, it wouldn’t have been a goal,” remarked Scotland manager Steve Clarke. “You could tell when the ball was heading towards Shaqiri that it was destined for the back of the net. He’s a top-class player, and you can’t give players of that caliber those kinds of chances.”
Throughout his career, Shaqiri has played for some of Europe’s most renowned teams, including Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and Liverpool. Despite joining the Fire two years ago, he has continued to deliver for his country on the grandest stages.”
