Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner secured his 20th victory of 2024 to reach the Miami Open semifinals for the third time in the last four years. He defeated Tomas Machac 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday.

Sinner, seeded second, will face No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev, setting up a rematch of last year’s Miami Open final. Medvedev won that match but has lost their last four encounters.

Medvedev secured his spot in the semifinals with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win over No. 22 seed Nicolas Jarry in a later match. For Sinner, this marks his fourth semifinal appearance of the season, boasting an impressive 20-1 record. Despite reaching the finals in 2021 and 2023 at this event, he fell short on both occasions.

Reflecting on his victory, Sinner acknowledged Machac’s strong serve early on and his consistent performance throughout the match, breaking his opponent’s serve four times to secure the win. “Feeling good on the court makes a difference,” Sinner noted. “I feel confident at the moment.”

On the women’s side, 14th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova continued her impressive run, defeating No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. This victory follows her upset win against No. 1 seed Iga Świątek, marking her first trip to a Miami Open semifinal.

“This is the biggest achievement for me today,” Alexandrova expressed. Alexandrova will face Danielle Collins in the semifinals, who defeated No. 23 seed Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-2.

Collins, making her first Miami semifinal appearance since qualifying six years ago, showcased her dominance against Garcia. Despite Garcia’s recent wins over Grand Slam champions, Collins maintained her focus throughout the match, winning in just 80 minutes.

“Against someone like Caro, it forces me to be more concentrated,” Collins commented on her performance.
