Sky Sports has launched an investigation into an incident involving Roy Keane and a fan after a Manchester United match. Keane, who was performing his pundit duties after United’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich, was approached by a home supporter who verbally accosted him. The altercation escalated when Keane, visibly angered, was caught on camera telling the fan, “I’ll wait for you in the car park.” Ipswich security stepped in promptly to remove the fan from the scene.
The fan, later identified as Ipswich supporter Neil Finbow, claimed responsibility for provoking Keane on social media. Finbow shared a post on Facebook, describing the incident and mentioning how Keane had offered to meet him in the car park. He admitted to making harsh remarks about Keane, criticizing his past management at Ipswich and referencing controversial moments from his career, such as his departure from the World Cup and his infamous tackle on Alf-Inge Håland. Finbow expressed long-standing resentment toward Keane, particularly regarding his tenure as Ipswich manager.
Further comments from Finbow clarified that the argument might have stemmed from an old grievance, with the fan recalling past interactions when Keane was in charge of Ipswich. According to Finbow, the fan’s issue with Keane had involved getting autographs for his children when Keane was Ipswich’s manager, with the fan accusing Keane of ruling with fear. The mention of the “car park” was explained by Finbow as a reference to where autograph sessions used to occur, not an invitation to a physical confrontation.
This incident follows a similar one from 15 months earlier, when Keane was involved in a confrontation with an Arsenal fan, leading to a legal case. Given these two incidents, Sky Sports executives have asked Keane’s colleagues, including Jamie Redknapp and Izzy Christensen, to provide their accounts of what happened. The aim is to gather a comprehensive understanding of the altercation. Production staff present during the incident have also been asked to contribute their observations.
At this stage, Sky Sports does not anticipate taking further action, and there are no indications of extra security being provided to Keane for future appearances. The network’s internal investigation is focused on gathering full accounts of the situation to assess the incident thoroughly.
