Juan Soto and Anthony Volpe each hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning against Jesús Luzardo, leading the New York Yankees to a dominant 7-0 victory over the Miami Marlins on Monday night.
The win extended the Yankees’ record to 9-2, matching their best start in team history. Soto received cheers from the fans after hitting his first home run at Yankee Stadium since joining the team. He acknowledged the support by applauding the crowd.
“It was incredible how the fans reacted. They surprised me with that one,” Soto said. “They show so much love, so it’s important to reciprocate whenever possible.”
In his debut season with the Yankees, Soto boasts a batting average of .357 with two home runs and 10 RBIs, following his acquisition from San Diego in December.
The Marlins, coming off a victory against St. Louis, dropped to a 1-10 record for the first time since 1998, when they lost 11 consecutive games following their World Series win.
“It’s important not to focus on the 1-10 record,” Luzardo remarked. “We need to stay focused and give our best effort every day to improve.” The game was remarkably quick, lasting only 2 hours and 1 minute, marking the fastest nine-inning game since 1992.
Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes, facing his hometown team for the first time, delivered an outstanding performance, allowing only two hits over eight innings while striking out six batters and walking none. It was his longest outing since 2022.
Miami’s Josh Maciejewski made his major league debut and swiftly retired the Marlins with three groundouts on just four pitches.
Volpe’s home run and Soto’s subsequent blast gave the Yankees a comfortable lead in the fourth inning. Alex Verdugo’s RBI single in the fifth added to Luzardo’s struggles on the mound, as he allowed seven runs, eight hits, and five walks in 4 2/3 innings.
