Sources have informed ESPN that Dusty May, formerly of Florida Atlantic University (FAU), has reached an agreement to helm the men’s basketball program at the University of Michigan.

Andy Miller, representing May through Klutch Sports, was in the final stages of negotiating a long-term contract with Michigan officials late into Saturday evening.

At 47 years old, May departs FAU following an impressive streak, including a surprising Final Four appearance in 2023 and a subsequent NCAA tournament berth in 2024. His tenure saw FAU amass 60 victories over the past two seasons, a feat matched only by UConn and Houston.

FAU’s recent loss to Northwestern in the NCAA tournament’s opening round spurred Michigan to swiftly secure May as their next coach.

Despite other big schools like Louisville and Vanderbilt being interested, May chose Michigan because he liked their supportive alumni network and the strong loyalty to the university and its sports teams. He thinks these things are really important in today’s college basketball world, where deals and player transfers can be very common.

May steps into the role previously held by Juwan Howard, who was relieved of his duties after five seasons, culminating in the program’s first last-place finish in the Big 10 since 1966-67.

May’s journey to this pinnacle has been defined by perseverance and patience. Arriving at FAU six years ago, he inherited a struggling program and led it to a commendable 126-69 record without a single losing season.

According to ESPN Stats & Information research, FAU’s .822 winning percentage over the past two years ranks fifth best in Division I basketball.

FAU’s ascent into the Top 25 rankings over the last two seasons marks a historic achievement for the school. Their Cinderella run to the Final Four as a No. 9 seed in 2024 places them among the select few teams seeded ninth or lower to reach such heights since the tournament’s inception in 1979.

May, an alum of Indiana University, has served as an assistant coach at various institutions, including his alma mater, USC, Eastern Michigan, Murray State, UAB, Louisiana Tech, and Florida.
