After defeating another top team to reach the Euro 2024 final, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has cautioned England or the Netherlands that his team can still get better.

Spain secured their spot in the European Championship final with a 2-1 win over France on Tuesday, with 16-year-old Lamine Yamal becoming the youngest-ever scorer in the tournament’s history.

France took an early lead through Randal Kolo Muani’s header from a cross by Kylian Mbappé, who played without his protective mask. Yamal equalized brilliantly in the 21st minute, and Dani Olmo scored the decisive goal just four minutes later.

“We faced a tough moment after conceding early. I just went for it and wanted to place the ball perfectly. I’m really happy,” Yamal said.

“I try not to overthink it, just enjoy myself, help the team, and if things go my way, I’m happy for the goal and the win.”

Spain, aiming for a record fourth European Championship title, will face either England or the Netherlands in the final on Sunday in Berlin — the day after Yamal turns 17.

“We knew they were a strong team, and they showed it again tonight,” remarked France coach Didier Deschamps. “Despite our early lead, Spain made things tough for us.

“They were better in terms of control and technique. Spain made the best impression tonight. They deserved the win.”

Spain has been the standout team of Euro 2024, winning all their matches and scoring 13 goals, matching a Spanish record for most goals at a European Championship and trailing only one goal behind the overall record set by France in 1984.

“I’m sure the final will be very different, against opponents who will push us to our limits,” De la Fuente said. “Even though it sounds challenging, there’s still room for improvement.”

Spain will discover their final opponent after England and the Netherlands face off in the second semifinal in Dortmund on Wednesday.

In Munich, there was surprise as Mbappé took to the field without the protective mask he had worn since breaking his nose in France’s first group game at Euro 2024.
