San Antonio Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama will sit out Wednesday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder due to an ankle injury, as reported by Andrew Lopez of ESPN. Despite Wembanyama’s desire to continue playing after sustaining the injury on April 5, coach Gregg Popovich emphasized the importance of resting the rookie to avoid exacerbating the issue.

The absence of Wembanyama means fans will miss out on a highly anticipated matchup between him and Chet Holmgren, the top two rookies in the NBA this season. Wembanyama, despite experiencing several short-term injuries throughout the season, has been relatively durable, featuring in 70 games and meeting the high expectations set for him in his rookie year.

His impressive performance, averaging 21.3 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 3.6 blocks, and 1.2 steals per game, underscores his potential as a future cornerstone for the Spurs. However, the team prioritizes his long-term health over short-term gains, especially considering their current position at the bottom of the Western Conference standings.

With Wembanyama sidelined, Zach Collins is expected to see increased playing time in the frontcourt until Wembanyama fully recovers. Despite the disappointment of his absence, the Spurs are committed to ensuring Wembanyama’s health and readiness for future seasons, recognizing his importance to the team’s future success.
