St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol has reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2026 season.

The 37-year-old, who previously played in the Cardinals’ minor league system, made an impressive debut as manager, leading the team to an NL Central title in his first season. Under his leadership, the Cardinals secured 93 victories in 2022, marking a significant turnaround from their previous season’s performance.

Marmol’s achievement also earned him the distinction of being the youngest manager to guide a team to the playoffs since Lou Boudreau in 1946, when Boudreau, at 31, took Cleveland to the World Series. Notably, the Cardinals had finished last in the division with a 71-91 record the year prior.

Reflecting on Marmol’s impact, Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak stated, “Over the past two seasons, we have experienced a lot of different emotions, both up and down.

And through it all, Oli has helped us navigate these challenging times.”

Marmol’s journey with the Cardinals began in 2007 when he joined the organization as a utility player. Following five seasons coaching in the minors, he transitioned to the major league coaching staff in 2017.

In recognition of his managerial prowess, Marmol placed fourth in the NL Manager of the Year voting in 2022, a season in which the Cardinals clinched their first division title since 2019.

With his contract originally set to expire after the current season, Marmol’s extension underscores the organization’s confidence in his leadership and vision for the team’s future.
