Spencer Steer drove in three runs with three hits, including a triple and two doubles. Elly De La Cruz also had a strong game with three hits, including a home run, helping the Cincinnati Reds defeat the struggling Atlanta Braves 9-4 on Wednesday.
Due to bad weather, the second game of the doubleheader was postponed and rescheduled for September 9.
Steer started off strong with an RBI triple in the first inning against Allan Winans (0-2), and later added a two-run double in the fourth inning. He finished with another double and scored two runs himself. Jake Fraley also contributed with three hits, including a two-run homer in the first inning.
The Reds managed a total of 12 hits in the game, hitting line drives across the field.
Winans struggled on the mound for Atlanta, giving up seven runs in just 2 2/3 innings, contributing to the Braves’ fourth consecutive loss. With key pitchers like Max Fried and Spencer Strider injured, and Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuña Jr. also out, the Braves are facing challenges in their rotation and lineup.
Despite the setbacks, the Braves, who currently lead the NL wild-card standings, remain optimistic. Center fielder Jarred Kelenic emphasized the team’s talent and leadership in the clubhouse, acknowledging the difficulties in baseball but expressing confidence in their ability to bounce back.
