Victor Wembanyama scored 25 points, and rookie Stephon Castle added 19, including six points during a key late run, as the San Antonio Spurs came from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat the Golden State Warriors 104-94 on Saturday night.
The Warriors were playing the second game of a back-to-back road trip, having won against the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday in the NBA Cup. They looked tired, especially in the final quarter, where they were outscored by 20 points.
San Antonio was down by 17 points late in the third but managed to tie the game at 90 when Castle made a driving layup with 4:25 left in the fourth. On the next possession, Castle hit a 3-pointer.
Wembanyama, who had missed the last three games due to a knee injury, helped the Spurs take the lead with a 3-pointer of his own. Castle then made a free throw with 2:28 left, completing an 11-0 run and putting the Spurs ahead by seven points, 97-90. A reverse layup from Harrison Barnes, assisted by Wembanyama, with 1:28 remaining, helped seal the win for San Antonio, their third straight victory.
Barnes added 22 points for the Spurs, who played without Devin Vassell (knee) and Keldon Johnson (hamstring).
Andrew Wiggins led Golden State with 20 points. Stephen Curry had 14 points, Trayce Jackson-Davis scored 12, and Buddy Hield and Lindy Waters III each added 11.
Golden State was ahead 29-17 after the first quarter. The Spurs managed to reduce their deficit to as low as six points, but the Warriors extended their lead when Wiggins hit a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left in the first half, giving them a 50-38 lead at the break.
The Warriors were up by as much as 17 points in the third quarter before the Spurs closed the gap, ending the period on a 7-0 run to make it 81-71 in favor of Golden State heading into the final quarter.
