Dragic, who played under Nash in Brooklyn, had previously commented on the Nets’ focus on accommodating star players rather than prioritizing team success. This environment, coupled with Irving’s reluctance to adhere to Nash’s strategies, contributed to Nash’s challenges in managing the team.
Nash acknowledged the complexity of coaching, highlighting the need for clear and honest communication with players. He found leading from the bench significantly different from his previous role as a player, where leadership was more about setting an example on the court. Coaching required him to navigate smaller, nuanced leadership moments and manage diverse personalities within the team.

Despite owner Joe Tsai’s initial refusal to fire Nash, the coach was eventually let go seven games into the 2022-23 season.
