Stuttgart, quickly rising up in the ranks, plans to extend goalkeeper Alexander Nübel’s loan for two more years, ensuring his presence for their anticipated return to the Champions League next season.
Nübel, currently on loan at Stuttgart, has played a vital role in the team’s unexpected success this Bundesliga season, propelling them to third place with six games left to play. Stuttgart hasn’t competed in the Champions League since the 2009-2010 season.
“I’m pleased to continue being part of this team, and it didn’t take me long to decide to stay with VfB (Stuttgart) beyond this summer,” Nübel stated.
Bayern announced on Friday that Nübel had extended his contract with the club until 2029, despite the loan arrangement meaning he won’t return to play for Bayern until at least 2026. This marks over five years since his last appearance for the club.
These agreements add more twists to the already complex journey of the 27-year-old Nübel, who was initially viewed as Bayern’s future replacement for Manuel Neuer when he joined from Schalke in 2020 at the age of 23.
Nübel made only four appearances for Bayern in his debut season and was subsequently loaned out to Monaco for the following two years before joining Stuttgart this season.
After Neuer suffered a leg injury while skiing after the 2022 World Cup, Bayern decided against recalling Nübel and instead signed Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer for cover.
Sommer departed for Inter Milan last year, and since then, longtime backup Sven Ulreich has stepped in when Neuer is unavailable for Bayern, who also have Israeli goalkeeper Daniel Peretz in their squad.
