The Tennessee Titans placed center Lloyd Cushenberry and veteran safety Quandre Diggs on injured reserve on Wednesday. To help fill the gap left by Diggs, they signed Mike Edwards to strengthen the secondary.

“Obviously with Quandre’s injury, having another player back there was important for us, and a good solid player came available and we found a way to make that happen,” said Titans coach Brian Callahan about Edwards.

Both Cushenberry and Diggs got hurt during last week’s overtime win against New England. With nine games left in the season, the Titans (2-6) now have 10 players on injured reserve, including starting cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, who was placed on the list on Sept. 27 due to a groin injury.

Callahan mentioned after the game that Cushenberry suffered some kind of ankle injury late in the third quarter. Diggs injured his left foot on a tackle early in the second quarter and had to be carted off to the locker room. NFL.com reported that Diggs will need surgery for a Lisfranc injury.

Cushenberry had signed a four-year contract worth $50 million in March, with $26 million guaranteed. The 6-foot-4, 315-pound center had started all 57 games in his career, most recently with Denver, after being drafted in the third round out of LSU in 2020.

He was an important part of the Titans’ offensive line, especially as the team dealt with a rookie left tackle in JC Latham and a rookie left guard in Peter Skoronski.

Right guard Dillon Radunz missed the last game with a foot injury, but the Titans are hopeful he will be back this Sunday when they face the Chargers (5-3). If Radunz returns, Daniel Brunskill is expected to take over at center.

Diggs, 31, is a nine-year NFL veteran who signed a one-year deal with the Titans in August. Mike Brown took over for Diggs in the game. The Titans are also hopeful that cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, who has missed the last three games with a quadriceps injury, will be ready to return soon.

Edwards, a veteran defensive back, has started 28 out of 78 games in his six-season career. A third-round pick by Tampa Bay in 2019, Edwards played for Kansas City last season and was with Buffalo this season. He has recorded eight interceptions, 236 tackles, one forced fumble, and five fumble recoveries.
