Report: Tennessee Investigated for ‘Major’ NCAA Rules Violations in Multiple Sports

The University of Tennessee is potentially on the brink of significant NCAA sanctions, according to a report by Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated.

The SEC athletic program is currently under investigation for potential rule violations, with one source characterizing it as a “major” inquiry.

While specific details remain scarce, the investigation is believed to encompass multiple sports and potential violations related to name, image, and likeness (NIL).

ESPN’s Pete Thamel corroborated the report, emphasizing the seriousness of the investigation.

Thamel highlighted that Tennessee faces the added challenge of being a repeat violator, stemming from the NCAA’s 2023 ruling related to violations during former coach Jeremy Pruitt’s tenure. The university’s defense, in this case, is expected to focus on the intricacies and uncertainties within NIL rules.

As both Thamel and Forde underscored, the gravity of the situation for Tennessee lies in the fact that it is a repeat violator following the NCAA’s stringent punishment against the football team in 2023.

The Committee on Infractions labeled that case as “one of the worst” it had encountered, involving over 200 rules infractions and 18 Level I violations from the football team alone.

Despite the severity of the violations, the COI opted not to impose a postseason ban on the Volunteers. Instead, they were subjected to a hefty $8 million fine, the vacation of 11 wins from the 2019 and 2020 seasons, and various recruiting restrictions.

Additionally, former head coach Jeremy Pruitt received a six-year show-cause penalty as part of the fallout from Tennessee’s internal investigation.

Forde highlighted that the COI, during the previous punishment, reserved postseason bans for Level I cases lacking exemplary cooperation. However, with another significant case emerging so soon, the possibility of postseason bans could be back on the table.

The timing of this investigation is crucial for Tennessee, as the program, under head coach Josh Heupel, has been showing signs of resurgence

After 14 seasons without double-digit wins, the Volunteers went 11-2 in 2022, winning the Orange Bowl, and followed up with a 9-4 record and Citrus Bowl victory in 2023.

Facing potential sanctions could halt the momentum just as the team seems poised for a return to national relevance, especially with the heightened competition in the SEC following the additions of Texas and Oklahoma.
