Naomi Osaka

Naomi Osaka’s triumph over Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva puts Japan in a favorable position to qualify for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals. Her victory, combined with Nao Hibino’s earlier win, gives Japan a 2-0 lead in the team competition. Meanwhile, Australia also takes a 2-0 lead over Mexico in their match.

To secure a spot in the Finals in November, both Japan and Australia need to win either Saturday’s reverse singles or the doubles match. The winners of these qualifiers will join other teams like Canada, Italy, and Spain, and a wildcard entry in the 12-team Finals in Seville.

Australia, aiming for its first title since 1974, has been runner-up twice in the last five years. Each matchup in the qualifiers follows a best-of-five series format, including four singles matches and, if required, a doubles match.

In Brisbane, Arina Rodionova and Daria Saville secured Australia’s lead with their singles victories over Mexico. The other matchups include Brazil versus Germany, France versus Britain, Switzerland versus Poland, USA versus Belgium, Slovakia versus Slovenia, and Ukraine versus Romania.
