Coco Gauff, the U.S. Open winner and the highest-paid female athlete globally, isn’t shy about speaking up. From addressing a Black Lives Matter rally at 16 to now, at 20, as she gears up to vote for the first time in a U.S. presidential election, she’s vocal.
In a recent chat with The Associated Press, Gauff discussed the challenging political situation in her home state of Florida, particularly for Black residents.
She expressed discontent with the government’s actions, a controversy over banning books in schools, which started with a bill signed by Governor Ron DeSantis.
Although DeSantis scaled back the law recently, he pointed fingers at liberal activists for exploiting it, while Gauff stressed the importance of community involvement and voting.
Gauff, who will compete in the French Open, emphasizes the significance of using one’s voice and voting, regardless of political affiliation. She’s been advocating for racial justice and against police brutality since her impromptu speech in 2020. Gauff believes every vote matters and encourages her generation to exercise their right to make a difference.
