On Monday, Houston Texans owner Cal McNair shared news that wide receiver Tank Dell is on track for a full recovery following his involvement in a shootout at a Florida restaurant last month.
While McNair refrained from providing detailed information about Dell’s injury, the team had initially characterized it as a “minor wound” in the aftermath of the April 27th incident, which also resulted in injuries to nine other individuals.
Addressing reporters prior to the team’s annual charity golf event, McNair acknowledged the gravity of the situation, describing it as “frightening,” yet expressed confidence in Dell’s recovery trajectory.
McNair conveyed optimism about Dell’s recovery, mentioning that he recently saw Dell in the office and noted his good spirits. However, he acknowledged that Dell would need to undergo rehabilitation to return to his pre-injury condition.
When queried about Dell’s readiness for the upcoming season, coach DeMeco Ryans remained somewhat evasive, stating that Dell “should be fine” without providing a direct confirmation about his availability for Week 1.
Ryans indicated that he has maintained communication with Dell since the shooting, characterizing their discussions as positive. Despite being pressed for specifics about Dell’s potential absence from practice, Ryans continued to deflect inquiries, reiterating his belief that Dell will ultimately be alright.
Dell, a third-round draft pick in 2023 from the University of Houston, enjoyed a promising rookie season with 709 receiving yards and a franchise rookie record of seven touchdown receptions before sustaining a left fibula injury in December.
Ryans previously stated in April that Dell had recovered from his fibula injury and was poised to participate in team workouts prior to the shooting incident. The Associated Press provided this report, shedding light on the ongoing recovery process for Dell and the cautious optimism expressed by the Texans’ ownership and coaching staff.
