Texas shortstop Corey Seager will have surgery to fix a sports hernia, which will end his season with the Rangers, general manager Chris Young announced on Thursday.
Seager visited doctors in Arizona earlier this week and is scheduled for surgery on Friday. This will be Seager’s second sports hernia operation in the past year, with this one on the opposite side from the previous surgery.
Young mentioned that it was a tough choice but necessary at this point in the season for Seager to fully recover, have a strong offseason, and be ready for spring training. Seager had been on the 10-day injured list since September 4 due to right hip pain that had been troubling him for about a month.
Seager, the World Series MVP, missed nearly all of spring training after having a sports hernia surgery in January. He had hoped to return this season but recognized the need for a complete offseason to prepare for 2025.
Seager said, “You can’t miss two offseasons. You’ve got to be healthy and get back into the work and get back into shape. Didn’t really have any buildup last year coming into the season. It’s something that you need to have.”
In 123 games this season, Seager batted .278 with 30 home runs and 74 RBIs. This is the third consecutive season he has hit 30 homers since joining the Rangers on a 10-year, $325 million contract. After a slow start with just two homers and eight RBIs in his first 29 games, Seager hit .296 with 27 home runs and 66 RBIs from May 3 onwards.
