Texas’ running backs room is facing a significant challenge following recent injuries. Initially, the team was dealing with the loss of starting running back CJ Baxter, who suffered a season-ending knee injury. With Baxter out, freshman Christian Clark was expected to step up and take over some of the carries.
However, the situation worsened when Clark, a highly regarded Rivals four-star recruit, tore his Achilles tendon during practice. This injury, which occurred on Monday, will sideline Clark for the entire season and necessitate surgery. The Longhorns’ official announcement confirmed the severity of the injury and its impact on their running back depth.
As a result, Texas now has only three scholarship running backs available for the season: junior Jaydon Blue, sophomore Quintrevion Wisner, and freshman Jerrick Gibson. Blue, who was third in rushing yards last year with 398 and added four touchdowns, will be a key player. Wisner had limited opportunities last season, while Gibson, another highly-rated recruit, is expected to contribute significantly.
In light of these injuries, the Longhorns are exploring alternative solutions. Head coach Steve Sarkisian mentioned that the team is considering position changes, possibly moving players from other positions, including both offensive and defensive players, to bolster the running back group. The coaching staff is taking a creative approach to address the depth issue.
The running back situation is especially crucial as Texas prepares for a challenging season, including a notable matchup against Michigan in Week 2. The team, which has strong overall roster depth, will need to find effective solutions to maintain a competitive running game following these setbacks.
