It’s rare for NFL teams to sign restricted free agents from other teams. Such moves are as uncommon as spotting mythical creatures like Sasquatch or the Loch Ness monster.
But today, there’s an exception. Ian Rapoport from NFL Media reports that the 49ers have signed Lions tight end Brock Wright to an offer sheet.
The details of the offer are not yet known. The Lions have five days to decide whether to match it. If they don’t, they won’t receive any compensation from the 49ers.
Wright was not drafted in 2021. The Lions offered him a one-year, $2.985 million deal, giving them the right to match any offer he receives. If they do match, Wright will be under contract with the Lions.
Last season, Wright played in 14 regular-season games, starting four. He caught 13 passes on 14 targets, gaining 91 yards and scoring one touchdown.
Teams usually avoid signing other teams’ restricted free agents, perhaps out of collusion or professional courtesy. Some teams simply prefer not to negotiate someone else’s contract if the offer is matched.
