The Atlanta Falcons have reached an agreement to bring in free agent wide receiver Darnell Mooney on a lucrative three-year contract worth $39 million, with $26 million guaranteed, according to agents David Mulugheta and AJ Stevens, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Mooney’s addition bolsters the Falcons’ offensive arsenal, providing new quarterback Kirk Cousins with another dynamic playmaker. Joining talents like tight end Kyle Pitts, receiver Drake London, and running back Bijan Robinson, Mooney brings versatility and speed to Atlanta’s offense.
Drafted by the Chicago Bears in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Mooney enjoyed a breakout season in 2021, amassing 81 receptions for 1,055 yards and four touchdowns.
However, injuries and inconsistent play hampered his performance over the last two seasons.
Struggling to assert himself as the Bears’ primary option behind DJ Moore, Mooney saw a decline in production, culminating in a career-low 31 catches for 414 yards and a touchdown in 2023. Additionally, his 2022 season was marred by an ankle injury, limiting him to just 12 games.
Despite these setbacks, Mooney has demonstrated his talent and potential, leading the Bears in receiving yards in 2022 with 493 yards. Throughout his career, he has amassed 213 receptions for 2,593 yards and 11 touchdowns in 60 games.
