The Buffalo Bills released safety Mike Edwards after failing to trade him before the NFL’s deadline on Tuesday.

Edwards, who was signed as a free agent during the offseason, asked to be traded a few weeks ago due to not getting enough playing time. He only played in three games for Buffalo this season and has been inactive for the past four games.

Edwards, who won his second Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs last season, was expected to start at safety for Buffalo after signing a one-year contract in March.

However, injuries kept him out of most of Buffalo’s spring activities and most of training camp, leading him to take on a backup role behind starters Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin.

Before joining Buffalo, Edwards played his first four NFL seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he also won a Super Bowl during the 2020 season.

In a separate move, the Bills placed edge rusher Dawuane Smoot on injured reserve, two days after he hurt his wrist in a 30-27 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Coach Sean McDermott said Smoot will need surgery and is expected to return before the season ends.
