The Buffalo Bills made significant roster moves on Wednesday, parting ways with key players to create salary cap space in preparation for free agency. Among those released are center Mitch Morse, safety Jordan Poyer, and reportedly cornerback Tre’Davious White.
Morse, who joined the Bills before the 2019 NFL season, was a mainstay on the offensive line, appearing in 77 games over five seasons and earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2022. Despite having one year remaining on his contract, Morse’s release will incur a $3 million cap hit for the team this year.
Poyer, who signed with Buffalo in 2017, emerged as a starter and recorded impressive stats with 22 interceptions and 11 sacks in 107 games. His release will result in a $2 million cap hit for the Bills in 2024.
Tre’Davious White, a first-round pick in 2017, was a standout performer for the Bills, earning three All-Pro selections and two Pro Bowl nods. While he had two years remaining on his contract, White’s release hasn’t been finalized yet.
The Bills plan to designate him as a post-June 1 cut, allowing them to gain $10.2 million in cap space instead of the initial $6 million.
Buffalo released defensive back Siran Neal, wide receiver Deonte Harty, and running back Nyheim Hines as part of their roster adjustments. The team also reportedly restructured pass rusher Von Miller’s contract, generating an extra $8.65 million in salary cap space.
With the Bills initially facing the league’s worst salary cap situation at $41.3 million over the limit, these moves were necessary to provide flexibility for the upcoming free agency period.
Following the player releases and contract restructuring, the Bills are now approximately $7.4 million over the cap, a more manageable figure as they enter free agency next week.
