The spotlight at the 2024 NFL draft scouting combine in Indianapolis shone brightly on Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy during its final day.
Worthy delivered a stunning performance in the 40-yard dash, clocking in at an impressive time of 4.21 seconds—a new NFL combine record, edging out the previous mark set by Washington wide receiver John Ross III in 2017 by a mere hundredth of a second.
While Worthy already had a solid college career, his exceptional time hinted at a whole new level of talent. In the 2023 season, he amassed 75 receptions for 1,014 yards, contributing significantly to the Longhorns’ journey to the College Football Playoff.
Following his record-breaking run, the NFL shared a head-on view of Worthy’s sprint, capturing the electrifying moment as Lucas Oil Stadium erupted in response to his unofficial time of 4.22 seconds flashing on the scoreboard. Shortly after, his official time solidified his place in NFL history.
Reflecting on his achievement, Worthy, still catching his breath, shared his disbelief with NFL Network’s Stacy Dales: “It’s crazy. I’ve been watching the combine my whole life. As a kid, seeing John Ross do that, I never thought I’d be able to be on this stage and do that.”
Rarely do NFL combine performances reach such iconic status, but if Worthy can translate his success into on-field performance, his remarkable run may become etched in NFL lore.
