The Chicago Cubs have decided to put shortstop Dansby Swanson on the 10-day injured list because of a sprained right knee. They’ve also brought back outfielder Seiya Suzuki.
This decision was made on Friday as the Cubs began a three-game series in Pittsburgh. Swanson’s placement on the injured list is retroactive to May 8.
Swanson has been dealing with this knee issue since late April and sat out the Cubs’ last game against San Diego on Wednesday. The team chose to give Swanson some time off instead of pushing him to keep playing through the injury.
“At this point in the season, dealing with this for another four and a half months doesn’t seem practical,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. “So the hope is that with a bit of rest now, he can put this behind him and not have it bother him for the rest of the season.”
Suzuki hasn’t been on the field since April 15 due to a strained right oblique. Chicago decided to keep Suzuki out of the lineup on Friday to allow him to recuperate after a couple of rehab starts earlier in the week.
