The Chicago White Sox are facing their worst season in over 50 years. They are currently on track to match the highest number of losses in baseball’s modern history.

After a 10-2 defeat against Texas on Wednesday night, the White Sox (27-77) have now lost 10 consecutive games and find themselves 50 games below a .500 winning percentage for the first time since finishing with a 56-106 record in 1970.

They are the first team since the expansion Mets in 1962 to lose 77 of their first 104 games — the Mets that year went on to set a record with 120 losses.

“We’re going through a tough stretch right now,” said White Sox manager Pedro Grifol. “But our approach is to come to the ballpark every day with the goal of winning. We’re also focused on improving, developing, and doing what’s necessary to set ourselves up for the future.”

Despite close losses in the previous two nights against Texas, the White Sox were still competitive on Wednesday until the reigning World Series champions scored six runs in the eighth inning. The four-game series concludes Thursday.

Chicago took an early 2-1 lead after Luis Robert Jr. hit his 12th home run in the third inning with one out.

Texas pitcher Nathan Eovaldi then retired 14 of the last 15 White Sox batters he faced, pitching through the seventh inning. The White Sox lost their 38th game of the season after holding the lead.

“It’s been really tough for everyone, players and coaches alike,” said Robert, speaking through a translator. “No one wants to go through this, but unfortunately, this is where we find ourselves.”

The White Sox have suffered six consecutive losses since the All-Star break and have lost 16 of their last 19 games overall.

Robert is one of several White Sox players, including American League strikeout leader and All-Star left-hander Garrett Crochet, who could potentially be traded to contending teams before the trade deadline next Tuesday.
