The Cincinnati Reds pitching staff took a hit on Saturday when All-Star starter Hunter Greene was placed on the 15-day injured list due to elbow soreness.
Greene, a right-hander, has a 9-4 record with a 2.83 ERA and 162 strikeouts this season.
He pitched seven innings and allowed just one run against the Cardinals on Tuesday, helping the Reds win 4-1. His injured list placement is retroactive to Wednesday.
“We put him on the IL for precautionary reasons,” said Cincinnati general manager Nick Krall. “It’s elbow soreness. We’re going to get an MRI in the next couple of days to try to figure it out.”
Greene had Tommy John surgery in 2019.
“He’s been tremendous this year, and it was a tough conversation to have with him, but he understood,” Krall said. “We knew he was going to miss at least one start, so this was the best way we could handle it.”
The Reds are still deciding who will take Greene’s scheduled start on Monday.
