Ezequiel Tovar hit a triple, double, and single, while Brenton Doyle smashed a three-run homer in the fourth inning, sparking a seven-run surge for the Colorado Rockies. This helped them break a four-game losing streak with a 9-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.
Despite having the worst record in the majors, the Rockies secured only their ninth win of the season and avoided being swept for the fourth time this year.
Charlie Blackmon contributed two RBIs and narrowly missed hitting a home run, completing a cycle for the Rockies. With this, the 37-year-old Blackmon climbed to fourth place on Colorado’s franchise list with 762 career RBIs. San Francisco briefly led 1-0 after Michael Conforto’s solo homer in the fourth inning.
However, Colorado swiftly turned the game around against starter Keaton Winn (3-5). Tovar kicked off the inning with a triple, followed by six consecutive hits, including Doyle’s 430-foot home run to center field, his fourth of the season.
After Winn was replaced by Randy Rodriguez, Blackmon tripled and Tovar doubled, resulting in seven runs off eight hits in just 3 2/3 innings for Winn.
Manager Bud Black commented, “Winn made some mistakes, and we took advantage of them by hitting some solid balls.”
Tovar became the second player in franchise history to achieve a triple and double in the same inning, following Garrett Hampson’s feat against Arizona on Aug. 11, 2020.
Cal Quantrill (2-3) pitched for six innings, delivering another strong performance after his shutout innings at Pittsburgh the previous Friday. In his last two starts, the 29-year-old right-hander has allowed just one run.
