When pass rusher Danielle Hunter joined the Texans in free agency, it’s said he didn’t go to the team that offered the most money. Reportedly, the Colts offered Hunter more than what he signed for with the Texans, as per Stephen Holder of ESPN.
Hunter’s Texans contract is for two years and $49 million, with $48 million guaranteed. It’s not clear how much more the Colts offered, or whether factors like the contract structure or Texas’ lack of state income tax made the Texans’ deal more appealing to Hunter.
However, Hunter may have simply chosen to play in Houston if the money was similar.
Hunter spent much of his childhood in the Houston area and mentioned after signing with the Texans that being close to friends and family was important to him.
“It means a lot,” Hunter said upon signing. “It’s an honor to be able to come back and play in front of my family and all the people that I grew up with. I know they’ve been pretty excited about the news lately. They’ll finally be able to come to a game and see me play.”
The Texans are hopeful that Hunter will help them stay competitive in the AFC South, and they might hope the Colts regret missing out on him.
