Alex Cobb has signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers, bringing in an experienced right-handed pitcher for their rotation.
Under the terms of the deal announced on Tuesday, Cobb has the chance to earn up to $1 million in bonuses if he pitches 140 and 150 innings.
Detroit is aiming to improve after making the American League wild card this year, marking their first postseason appearance since 2014. The Tigers swept Houston in the opening round before being knocked out by Cleveland in the AL Division Series.
The 37-year-old Cobb joins a rotation led by AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal.
This season, Cobb only appeared in three games, going 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA for the Guardians. He also pitched in two postseason games for the AL Central champions.
Cobb started Game 3 of the ALDS in Detroit, giving up two runs and three hits in three innings during a 3-0 loss.
In 2023, Cobb finished with a 7-7 record and a 3.87 ERA in 28 starts for San Francisco. He had hip surgery in October, which kept him out at the start of this season. In July, Cobb was traded from the Giants to the Guardians.
Cobb has a career record of 79-76 with a 3.84 ERA over 233 starts in 13 seasons, having also played for Tampa Bay, Baltimore, and the Los Angeles Angels.
The Boston native was selected by Tampa Bay in the fourth round of the 2006 amateur draft and made his major league debut in 2011, spending his first six seasons with the Rays.
To make room for Cobb on the 40-man roster, outfielder Akil Baddoo was designated for assignment.
