Next week is likely to be an emotional one for Warriors fans.
Klay Thompson’s much-awaited return to the Chase Center is set for this Tuesday, and the Warriors are planning something special for the occasion. The team has revealed some of their plans to honor the Bay Area legend as he returns to his home floor, and they are going all out.
To celebrate, the Warriors will give every fan in attendance a special captain’s hat, a nod to Thompson’s “Captain Klay” nickname, which he earned after commuting to games and practices by boat during his time with the team. Thompson’s long-time teammate and fellow splash brother, Stephen Curry, will also speak to Thompson and the crowd before the game.
Thompson’s time with the Warriors has been nothing short of incredible. He played a key role in helping the Warriors rise from being a struggling team to one of the most successful dynasties in NBA history, winning the hearts of fans along the way.
Klay ended his career with Golden State as a four-time NBA champion, a five-time All-Star, and an all-time fan favorite.
Warriors fans will always remember moments like when he signed a fan’s toaster, sparking a legendary win streak, and when he set the NBA record for most points scored in a single quarter.
While Thompson’s time with the Warriors was filled with great moments, the past couple of years haven’t been as easy. ESPN reported this summer that Thompson felt “miserable” toward the end of his time in Golden State, dealing with contract negotiations and struggles with his performance on the court.
Because of this, the Warriors want to make his return extra special.
“This might be the most emotional, impactful homecoming that will ever happen. Not just for the Warriors, but for anybody, given the history that he’s had,” said Warriors president and chief operating officer Brandon Schneider, according to The Mercury News. “We spent quite a bit of time thinking about the proper way to honor Klay Thompson.”
Fans of the Warriors and the NBA will be in for a memorable night on Tuesday. The game against the Mavericks will have extra significance as the first match of the NBA Cup group stage, and emotions will run high as the Warriors pay tribute to Captain Klay. Be sure to bring tissues.
