The Green Bay Packers missed a great chance to start their season with a win while Jordan Love was leading their offense.
Now, they will need to find a way to succeed without their main quarterback, at least for a short time.
Love was helped off the field during the final moments of the Packers’ 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday in Brazil. A source who knows about the situation said Love injured his medial collateral ligament (MCL), but not his ACL, and he is expected to return this season.
The source talked to the AP on the condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t officially shared details about Love’s injury.
No exact timeline for his return has been given. ESPN and NFL Network reported the news first, with ESPN suggesting Love could be out for three to four weeks, while NFL Network estimated three to six weeks.
“Obviously you don’t want to see the leader of your team get hurt,” running back Josh Jacobs said after the game.
Love, 25, was playing his first regular-season game after signing a four-year, $220 million contract extension this summer. The Packers started the season with hopes of reaching the Super Bowl largely because of Love, who led the NFL’s youngest team to a surprising playoff spot last season as a first-year starter.
While it’s good news that Love is expected to return this year, the Packers are now facing a big challenge at quarterback.
Malik Willis, a 2022 third-round draft pick from Liberty, is the only other quarterback on the Packers’ 53-man roster.
He has generally been seen as a better runner than passer. Willis has started three games in his career—all during his rookie year—and didn’t pass for 100 yards in any of them.
Additionally, Willis joined the Packers less than two weeks ago when they traded for him from the Tennessee Titans for a 2025 seventh-round pick. This means he might not have had much time to get used to the team’s offense.
