The Halle Open’s X account playfully suggested that Roger Federer’s victory in the 2019 edition of the tournament was scripted, following the release of a humorous ATP skit imagining the Tour as a reality show.
In response to the video, the Halle Open’s account quipped about their desire for a German champion in 2019 but humorously noted that the ATP Tour insisted on the storyline of Federer clinching his 10th Halle title.
“Now the secret is out we can tell you that: We desperately wanted to have a new German tournament champion in 2019, but the @atptour insisted the “Roger Federer winning Halle for a 10th time” storyline was the better call. Well… #TheTour #ThisIsTheatre,” the tweet read.
Federer indeed secured his 10th Halle singles title in 2019 by defeating Belgium’s David Goffin in the final. However, the Halle Open hasn’t seen a German singles champion since 2016, when Florian Mayer emerged victorious over compatriot Alexander Zverev in the final.
