The Las Vegas Raiders are making a significant move as free agency kicks off. Expected to bolster their defensive line, the Raiders are set to sign Pro Bowl defensive tackle Christian Wilkins from the Miami Dolphins. The four-year deal is valued at a base of $110 million, with an impressive $84.75 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport’s report on Monday.
Despite Wilkins delivering a standout performance in 2023, with career-high numbers in sacks (nine), QB pressures (61), and QB hits (23), the Dolphins chose not to use the franchise tag on the 28-year-old defensive tackle.
In addition to his strong pass-rushing contributions, Wilkins recorded 65 tackles, including 10 for losses, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries during his fifth NFL season. Gregg Rosenthal ranked him second in the Top 101 NFL free agents of 2024.
With Bilal Nichols, John Jenkins, and Adam Butler, the Raiders’ starting defensive tackles from the previous season, all becoming pending free agents, the addition of Wilkins adds strength to their defensive front.
This move aligns with the Raiders’ goal of fortifying their defense under the new full-time head coach, Antonio Pierce.
Paired with pass rusher Maxx Crosby, who had an impressive 14.5 sacks last season and led the NFL in tackles for loss with 23, the Raiders now boast a formidable defensive line.
Both Wilkins and Crosby are known for their durability, with Wilkins having started 51 consecutive games, and Crosby maintaining a perfect attendance record throughout his five-year career. The Raiders’ defensive overhaul positions them as contenders in the upcoming season.
On the flip side, the Dolphins face a significant challenge in filling the void left by Wilkins on their defensive front. Not only has he been one of Miami’s standout players in recent seasons, but Wilkins has also played a key role as a locker-room leader.
