Ehire Adrianza and Mike Trout scored during the seventh inning due to a wild pitch and a throwing error, helping the Los Angeles Angels come back from a three-run deficit to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 on Monday night, breaking a four-game losing streak.
Adrianza contributed two hits and drove in a run, while Jo Adell hit a home run as the Angels celebrated manager Ron Washington’s 72nd birthday with a win.
“It was my birthday, but the win was much needed,” Washington commented.
Alec Bohm extended his hitting streak to 13 games and brought in three runs for the Phillies, who had previously won four consecutive games.
Despite walking nine batters, five Angels pitchers limited the Phillies to six hits. Adam Cimber (2-0) crucially escaped a bases-loaded situation in the seventh inning by inducing Brandon Marsh to ground out, preventing the Phillies from scoring.
“That was the most important part of the game for both teams,” Washington noted. “It kept us in the game and gave us a chance to turn things around.”
Carlos Estévez secured his fifth save in six opportunities, although he allowed one run in the ninth inning. Trea Turner scored on Bohm’s sacrifice fly, but Estévez struck out Marsh to end the game with the tying run on second base.
“We had our chances, no doubt. We’ve been capitalizing, but tonight was just one of those nights,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson remarked.
In the seventh inning, Adrianza began with an infield single and advanced to third base due to Trout’s groundout. Trout then stole second base, setting the stage for Taylor Ward.
With a 0-2 count, Seranthony Domínguez’s fastball went low, allowing Adrianza to score easily. The throw from catcher Garrett Stubbs to Domínguez at home plate was too high, enabling Trout to score, giving the Angels a two-run lead.
