Chris Young has received a contract extension and a new position with the Texas Rangers after nearly four years as general manager and guiding the team to its first World Series win.
On Friday, the Rangers announced that Young will continue with a multiyear contract extension and has been promoted to President of Baseball Operations.
Young was appointed general manager in December 2020 and took charge of the team’s baseball operations in August 2022. Although the Rangers won the World Series last year, they were 7 1/2 games behind in both the AL West and the wild card standings with 15 games left to play. Young’s original four-year contract was due to end after this season.
“His leadership and vision were crucial in winning the World Series for Arlington for the first time, and he is dedicated to ensuring the team remains competitive year after year,” said Ray Davis, the team’s majority owner and managing partner.
The team has not provided additional details about the extension or mentioned if there will be other changes in the baseball operations department, such as hiring a new general manager.
Two years ago, Young took over all aspects of baseball operations from Jon Daniels, who had been fired as president of baseball operations.
Daniels, who was 28 when he became GM in October 2005, led the Rangers to their first World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011. He was named president of baseball operations in 2013 and held both titles until Young was brought in.
