The Miami Marlins have separated from Skip Schumaker, marking the end of his two-year tenure as the team’s manager and the 2023 NL Manager of the Year.

During his time, the Marlins had a record of 146-178. Schumaker was hired in 2022 as the franchise’s 16th manager, with a two-year contract that included a club option for the 2025 season, which the team canceled earlier this year.

“It has been a tremendous honor serving as manager of the Miami Marlins. I’ve built long-lasting friendships with the staff and players and am proud of all that we accomplished together,” he said.

In his first season, Schumaker took the Marlins to their first playoff appearance in a non-pandemic year since 2003. They reached the postseason despite having a minus-57 run differential and were ultimately swept by the Phillies in their NL wild-card series.

This past offseason, the Marlins made big changes in their front office, including letting go of general manager Kim Ng, who hired Schumaker and built the roster that made the playoffs.

The Marlins’ success in 2023 did not continue into this season. After starting 0-9, the worst in franchise history, new President of Baseball Operations Peter Bendix traded two-time batting champion Luis Arraez to the Padres for four prospects, which led to a small fan protest about the team’s direction.

Schumaker stayed positive during the Marlins’ season, which ended with a 62-100 record and was affected by injuries to 2022 Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara, opening day starter Jesus Luzardo, and right-hander Eury Perez.

“We’ll turn this around,” Schumaker said in April.

However, after trading away their veteran players with high salaries for prospects, a new rebuild is on the way for the Marlins.

Star center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. was traded to the Yankees, along with first baseman Josh Bell, outfielder Bryan De La Cruz, and relievers Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing.
