Jackson Chourio and Wiliam Contreras hit home runs in the first inning and scored again in the eighth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers came back to win 6-4 against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

Devin Williams picked up his third save in as many chances by striking out Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani to end the game. This save came after Williams secured a 5-4 win the previous day by retiring Ohtani, Betts, and Freddie Freeman in order.

With these victories, the Brewers split the four-game series between the division leaders.

“We know we have a really good team here and we know we can compete with anybody,” Chourio said through a translator. “Our job is to go out there and show it on the field.”

The Brewers were behind 4-3 when they loaded the bases in the eighth inning. Chourio doubled, Garrett Mitchell walked, and Contreras hit an infield single that struck the left leg of reliever Daniel Hudson (6-2).

Willy Adames’ single to left field scored Chourio to tie the game. Dodgers third baseman Kiké Hernández dived to field a ground ball from Tyler Black but did not have enough time to throw to the plate.

Hernández threw to first base instead, allowing Mitchell to score the go-ahead run. Contreras added an insurance run from third base when Rhys Hoskins grounded out, and the ball hit Hudson’s leg.

“He gets a double-play groundball that unfortunately hit him,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “It was right at (second baseman) Gavin (Lus). It was a double-play ball.”

The Dodgers, who were down 3-0 in the first inning, had taken a 4-3 lead when Hernández hit a tiebreaking two-out single in the sixth inning.

Milwaukee had taken an early lead when Los Angeles’ Jack Flaherty allowed home runs to two of the first four batters he faced.

Brice Turang led off the game with a double, and Chourio followed with a 421-foot home run to left-center for his 15th homer of the season. The 20-year-old rookie also has 16 steals.
