Following his arrest for driving while intoxicated in December, Vikings offensive coordinator Wes Phillips reached a plea deal for a lesser charge of careless driving. Now, the Vikings have decided to suspend Phillips for the next three weeks, as reported by multiple sources.
These three weeks in April aren’t particularly crucial for an offensive coordinator. The Vikings’ offseason program doesn’t kick off until April 15, and the initial phase of that program doesn’t involve any on-field activities.
Therefore, Phillips won’t miss significant coaching time with the Vikings’ offense. He’ll return in time to contribute to the team’s draft preparations.
Despite his arrest, Phillips continued coaching throughout the remainder of the last season, including the Vikings’ Week 14 game against the Raiders, which took place shortly after his arrest.
Phillips is entering his third season as the Vikings’ offensive coordinator. Previously, he spent time on the staffs of the Rams, Washington, and Dallas. He comes from a football family, being the son of former NFL head coach Wade Phillips and the grandson of former NFL head coach Bum Phillips.
